Correctional Center Release Paths

New Hanover Correctional Center is a minimum-custody male prison operated by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. It is also designated as a reentry facility. A true state-prison release may place a person in the community under post-release supervision, under parole for an older eligible sentence, or on unconditional discharge. The exact state record labels matter because physical exit from prison does not always end legal supervision.

DAC says the facility operates a large work-release program with more than 140 offenders leaving the institution daily for assigned work. Those daily movements are not discharge. Participants remain incarcerated and return under prison rules. A work assignment, community activity, last movement date, or proposed date should never be substituted for an actual release.

The statewide scope also prevents a common error. A person held at this Wilmington prison may have been convicted in another county. A person arrested in New Hanover may serve a sentence elsewhere. Search statewide by person and DAC number instead of limiting the inquiry to the facility’s physical location.

Confirm Correctional Center Release

Start with the NC DAC Offender Public Information search. Use the seven-digit DAC offender number when known because names and aliases can produce multiple matches. Otherwise search by name, then compare birth information, gender, race, convictions, admission history, and county data before opening a record.

1. Select “All” to include active and inactive records. “Inactive” is broader than recently released.
2. Open the matching permanent DAC number and inspect incarceration, sentence, and movement information.
3. Locate an “Actual Release Date” in the sentence history. Do not silently convert a projected date into a completed event.
4. Read the top incarceration and probation, parole, or post-release status together.
5. Check the separate monthly Inmate Release Search when the release month or county filter is useful.
6. Use NC SAVAN for a matching custody-change notice, then contact the listed supervision office when the status remains active.

The detailed record can include labels such as Inmate Status, Incarceration Status, Current Status, Admission Date, Current Location, Previous Location, Last Movement Date, Projected Release Date, Actual Release Date, release type, and Probation/Parole/Post Release Status. Preserve those labels. “POST RELEASE/PAROLE” with active supervision means the person is outside prison but remains under DAC authority.

Sentence blocks provide another identity and release check. They may show sentence number, commitment type, county of conviction, service status, sentence begin date, sentence status, punishment type, docket, offense date, minimum and maximum terms, and parole begin or end dates. Compare those details with the person’s known case before relying on an Actual Release Date. One DAC record can contain several sentence entries, and the end of one entry does not prove that every active term or hold has ended.

Movement is not discharge. A Previous Location or Last Movement Date can document transfer between state institutions, assignment changes, or other internal activity. At New Hanover Correctional Center, daily work-release travel is also continuing custody. The decisive combination is an actual release entry, a current incarceration status showing the prison exit, and the current supervision field. If those fields conflict, contact DAC rather than choosing the most favorable date.

It can be filtered by release county, year, month, surname, or sound-alike spelling, and NEW HANOVER is selectable. This tool is a state-incarceration release list. It is not a rolling New Hanover County jail 24-hour or 72-hour feed. “Release county” is not necessarily the county of conviction, arrest, or prison location. A row filtered to New Hanover therefore should not be described automatically as a release from New Hanover Correctional Center. Confirm the prior location and sentence record.

As observed in July 2026, the interface offered release years 2024 through 2026. That is a dated observation, not a permanent retention promise. For older history, use the permanent offender record and DAC public-record channels.

The prison can address facility-specific routing, but the statewide offender system is the primary public release path. For record questions beyond the public display, use DAC’s public-record process. DAC records cover people who served a state prison sentence or participated in state Community Supervision. They do not cover a person who merely bonded out of the county detention facility and never entered DAC authority.

A focused DAC request should identify the permanent offender number and the specific state-custody event. Public basic conviction, sentence length, time served, admission, and release material may be available through DAC channels. Classification, behavior, security, medical, and underlying Community Supervision files can have access limits. Ask for the public portion and a legal basis for any withheld field instead of treating the public offender display as the complete agency file.

The official page confirms that this is a state institution. That distinction controls which offender search, release record, and supervision office should be used.

New Hanover Correctional Center

NC DAC identifies the institution as male, minimum custody, with an official capacity of 402. Its reentry role and work-release activity prepare eligible incarcerated people for community transition, but those programs do not change the core custody test. Someone is released only when DAC records a completed prison exit under the applicable authority.

A state correctional record can also outlive current county jail visibility. DAC’s search covers current state prisoners, probationers, parolees, and historical state information dating to 1972. That long state scope does not turn it into a county booking database. Match the person’s custody history before using the result.

These fields help explain the release, while the current top-level status shows whether community supervision continues.

Correctional Center Release Dates

A projected release date is a forecast. It can change because of the commitment judgment, offense date, structured-sentencing rules, jail credit, consecutive or concurrent terms, authorized credits, disciplinary action, pending charges, holds, or later court and agency decisions. North Carolina does not provide one public formula that safely reduces every sentence to a simple percentage.

Use the displayed projected label for planning, then return for the Actual Release Date and current status after the event. NC SAVAN may issue projected-release and custody-change notices when the contributing state data supports them. Notifications can lag or reflect corrections, so do not use an alert alone as a pickup schedule or certified release ledger.

New Hanover Release Supervision

Post-release supervision follows specified prison sentences under North Carolina structured sentencing. Parole applies mainly to older or otherwise statutorily eligible cases. Probation is generally a court-ordered community sentence and is not the same as prison release. Search the DAC record for the exact active status and probation, parole, or post-release office.

A detailed record may show a finer District 05 unit. Have the person’s full name and DAC number ready and ask which unit holds the case. Underlying Community Supervision case files have confidentiality limits, so use the public status and office route.

Supervision completion is another event. Do not infer discharge merely because prison custody ended, an address changed, or a projected end date passed. Confirm the current DAC status and any Commission action.

NC SAVAN is valuable for a release or movement alert, but it is not the state sentence file. A contributor’s “released” event ends the named custody. It does not by itself answer whether supervision began or another custodian assumed control. Pair it with the actual release field and current status.
